SWD XCM Enduro Series 2012, Report and results

The SWD Enduro series 2012 has been finalised. Thank you to every cyclist who participated in the series.

The series consisted of 5 races, Oubos, 25 February, King Fisher, 24 March, Rheenendal MTB Challenge, 27 April, Wild Pig , 26 May and Tour de Plett, 30 June. The series showed a tremendous growth in 2012 with 89 participants where in 2011 only 31 took part. This indicates to me that there is growth in the sport, which is confirmed by the growing numbers in these events.

All of the events were well organised and must be congratulated for their efforts. Being part of the series resulted in the organisers having to produce two sets of results as not all participants took part in the series. For those organisers that handed out the Enduro medals, thank you very much. This practise however needs to be revised as medals are very expensive and provision needs to be made for all the categories. This resulted in a huge amount of medals not used or not handed out. In my opinion the money could be spent more wisely.

There were 3 riders that took part in all Five of the events and they were: Carlo Coetzee, Leendert Cronje and Thea-Marie van der Sandt. What a commitment from these riders. The other rider that needs mentioning is Bridget O’Meara a master Woman competing in the Veteran Woman class and winning that class, well done.

Coming to the results for the series, each organiser produced their set of results that were combined to form the end results for the series. A draft result was sent out to all the clubs to circulate to their members and make sure the results were correct. The queries received were corrected and we have the final results. The four best results were used to calculate the final standings, although most of the competitors did not compete in all of the races. When four or less races were ridden all of those results were used. There were a number of categories where the points were very close and participation in more races meant gathering more points. Many categories’ standings could have changes at the last race. In the Junior Ladies category Tyla Odendaal and Mikayla Oliver ended in joint 1st place.

Well done to all the 1st place winners, you all deserve that spot. For the other participants, thanks for the participation.

The name Enduro series will not be used from next year as the name Enduro has a different meaning. Enduro is a combination of Cross Country (XCO), Downhill (DHI) and Half Marathon Racing (XCM) and therefore a change in name. The series will be called a Marathon series and not Enduro Series.

Most of the cyclists in the number one position will qualify for their SWD colours and will be awarded at the end of 2012. The final decision on awarding the colours lies with the SWD Executive Committee and will be communicated by them.
